NURSING EDUCATION & WORKFORCE FORUMS

What is this project about?

To support the work of the Taskforce and other bodies implementing recommendations at a national level, all States and Territories have established Nursing Education and Workforce Forums. The purpose of these forums is to create a place where local perspectives and issues related to the implementation of the recommendations can be considered and local partnerships between sectors can flourish, and to assist with the implementation of the recommendations.

Many jurisdictions have already established groups that have some of these elements but a national approach will ensure that the objectives of the forums to reach across the breadth of the education (including VET), health, community and aged sectors (including private and public) can be consistently achieved.

In addition to addressing local and regional nursing education and workforce issues, the forums have been specifically requested to consider the following:

  • REC 13 - Student Nurse Employment
  • REC 14 - Standards for Transition Programs.
  • REC 20 - Nurse Academics and Teachers·
  • REC 27- Encouragement Of Inter-Disciplinary and Cross Professional Approaches To Education and Practice as well as recommendations from AHWAC reports on Critical Care and Midwifery workforce.

The links with these forums will be an important component of the overall communication strategy for the Taskforce. An evaluation process will be jointly developed with States and Territories and the Taskforce will report to health and education and training ministers on the impact of the forums at the end of two years.

In July 2005, The Taskforce asked jurisdictions to provide an update on their activities related to (13, 14, 20 & 36). The summary of activity in each State and Territory for these four recommendations is provided in the Supplementary Report.

Recommendations being implemented by States and Territories

As part of the work around Recommendation 3, The Taskforce has been asked by Health Ministers t evaluate the efficacy of Forums in 2006. To do this, N³ET is currently working with Chief Nurses on collection of baseline information on the activities and progress of those recommendations that States and Territories have responsibility for implementing. This information will identify work completed prior to the commencement of forums, that achieved over the past 12 months and the work planned for the coming year.

Recommendations that States and Territories have lead responsibility for are:

National Framework for All Forums

The Taskforce and CNOs have developed a national framework for the establishment, operation and evaluation of Forums. Each State and Territory is customising forums to ensure they meet local need but the principles in the framework are applied.
